Protein treatments are the most misused product in natural hair care. They’re genuinely effective at what they do โ temporarily filling gaps in a damaged cuticle so the strand holds together โ but “my hair is dry and breaking” is not automatically a protein problem. Often it’s the opposite, and adding protein to hair that already has too much makes the breakage worse.
So before the picks, the diagnostic that matters.
Do a stretch test. Take a shed strand, wet it, and pull gently.
Get this backwards and you’ll spend six weeks making your hair brittle. Now the products, roughly strongest to gentlest.
Match strength to actual damage, not to how frustrated you are. The stretch test above is the whole decision. Reaching for the strongest product because your hair is annoying you is how people end up with protein overload.
Always follow protein with moisture. Protein hardens; moisture softens. A protein treatment without a moisturising deep conditioner afterward leaves you stiffer than when you started. The stronger the treatment, the less optional this is.
Know the overload signs. Straw-like texture, dullness, hair that snaps rather than stretches, and tangling that appears out of nowhere. If you see these, stop all protein โ including leave-ins and stylers that contain it โ and run moisture-only deep conditioners for two to three weeks.
Check your other products. This is the trap nobody mentions. Hydrolysed keratin, wheat protein, silk amino acids, and collagen turn up in leave-ins, gels, and creams. You can be doing a “monthly” protein treatment while getting protein at every single step without realising. Run your regulars through the ingredient checker before adding a treatment on top.
Low porosity needs less than you think. A flat cuticle has fewer gaps to fill, so protein sits on the surface and stiffens the strand. If you have low porosity hair, go gentler and less often than the label suggests.
